LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic (5-1) celebrated homecoming week Friday with a crushing 42-0 victory over the Sophie B. Wright Warriors (1-4).

The Comets were ahead 14-0 with three minutes left on the clock in the first quarter and things just got better from there.

“We came out a scored right away on our first possession,” SCC head football coach Frank Monica said. “It wasn’t easy. We have to move the ball around a little bit with some running and throwing. But I was just happy to see us getting back on our winning ways.”

And win they did. The Comets had the score up to 21-0 by the beginning of the second quarter.

A touchdown pass to Brady Becker and a touchdown by Justin Loupe brought the score to 35-0.

The last touchdown of the night, which was scored with more than eight minutes left in the first half, brought the Comets’ total to 42.

With a victory imminent, Monica said he decided to let the more inexperienced players on the field.

“We decided to play our second unit in the second half,” Monica said. “It didn’t make sense to play our regulars and someone gets dinged in the game. We were up 42 to nothing and that’s not very wise. Plus, you never want to embarrass anyone. The game was out of reach and secured. The important thing was to give some other kids some playing time.”
