RESERVE — In an effort to prepare children for the upcoming school year, local organizations are partnering to provide free school supplies for school-aged children.

St. John the Baptist Parish officials are partnering with Eliza Eugene, Blessed to be a Blessing and title sponsor Marathon Petroleum to host the annual Backpack Extravaganza and School Supply Giveaway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at REGALA Gym, 200 Regala Park Drive in Reserve.

The event is for local children and their parents in anticipation of the upcoming school year.

Free backpacks, school supplies and hygiene kits will be available to the first 500 children. Registering for the event in advance is not necessary; however, a parent or guardian must be present with the child to receive supplies.

In addition to school supplies, free health screenings, hygiene and health information, free dental kits and refreshments will be provided.
