Tax propositions pass; Allen wins justice seat

LAPLACE – Tax propositions swept the boards in Saturday’s elections in St. Charles and St. James parishes. In St. John the Baptist Parish’sDistrict 6, a justice of the peace special election was settled.
St. Charles ParishEight percent of the 29,461 eligible voters turned out to approve three parishwide propositions. Following are official results from Clerk ofCourt Charles Oubre: * Proposition One, a 10-year renewal of the 1.97-mill recreation programoperations property tax, was approved by a margin of 65 to 35 percent.
Vote totals were 1,696 favoring and 894 opposing the proposition.
* Proposition Two, a 10-year supplemental 1 mill recreation program operations tax, was approved by a margin of 25 votes. Vote totals were1,298 favoring and 1,273 opposing the proposition. This will only be leviedin years when the full authorized mosquito control tax is not levied.
* Proposition Three, a 10-year renewal of the .98-mill St. Charles Councilon Aging program property tax, was approved by a margin of 70 to 30 percent. Vote totals were 1,817 favoring and 754 opposing.St. James ParishSix percent of the 14,217 eligible voters turned out to approve two parishwide propositions. Following are unofficial results, as of presstime: * Proposition One, a 10-year renewal of the 5-mill road construction and maintenance property tax, was approved by a margin of 82 to 18 percent.
Vote totals were 681 favoring and 150 opposing the proposition.
* Proposition Two, a 10-year renewal of the 5-mill public buildings operations and maintenance property tax, was approved by a margin of 79 to 21 percent. Vote totals were 652 favoring and 173 opposing theproposition.
St. John the Baptist Parish* Seven and a half percent of the 4,488 eligible voters in District 6 turned out to elect George Allen as justice of the peace, by a margin of 61 to 39 percent. Vote totals were 220 votes for Allen and 142 votes for Dorrel J.Triche Jr. These are official results, according to Clerk of Court HaroldMontegut Jr.
