Keller: Share your successes with those who helped you

Sunday morning I was shopping at Winn Dixie in LaPlace and while pushing my shopping cart down an aisle, a man doing the same thing crossed my path. I said, “Hello. Have a good day!”

After he went ahead of me a short distance, he turned around and said, “You’re Mr. Keller!”

“Yes, sir!” I answered. “What’s your name?”

“Leroy,” he said with a smile. He immediately said, “I haven’t had a drink in 24 years.”

“That’s great!” I asked what made him quit drinking.

“When I went to your DWI classes.”

“Did you go to a treatment center or attend a program such as AA?”

“No, I just decided to quit.”

If you’re reading this and find it hard to believe, I can certainly understand. It’s hard for me to believe. He told me that he was 69 years old and doing well.

I thanked him for sharing this with me and said, “You have encouraged me. I will never forget our meeting this morning.”

I’ve been conducting DWI classes for 31 years, and I thank the officials of the 29th and 40th Judicial District Courts for granting me this opportunity.

I was told to charge a fee for my service. When those who attend ask me why I don’t charge, I tell them that God told me never to charge for something He freely gives.
