EDGARD — The gray brick building under construction at 130 Louisiana Highway 640 in Edgard will open as a Dollar General this spring, giving the West Bank another convenient shopping option.

Dollar General public relations specialist Angela Petkovic said a grand opening date would be announced as construction nears completion.

Talk of a new store on the West Bank began in 2018 as Dollar General corporate representatives surveyed demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns.

“We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three- to five-mile radius, or a 10-minute drive,” Petkovic said.

Once opened, the store is expected to employ six to 10 people, and Petkovic said those interested can apply for available positions at dollargeneral.com/careers.

Dollar General sells name brand and private brand merchandise, including packaged and refrigerated food, health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, home goods, seasonal items, toys and basic clothing.

Kellogg’s, General Mills, Nabisco, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Kimberly-Clark are among the well-known brands to be offered at the new location. According to Petkovic, Dollar General is an ardent supporter of education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation by providing grants to schools, libraries and non-profits stationed near each store or distribution center.

“The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also supports individuals in the communities that Dollar General stores serve who may be interested in learning how to read, speak English or prepare for the high school equivalency test,” Petkovic said.

Referrals for local literacy services are available at the cash register in every Dollar General location.
