Keller: Love story dates back more than 69 years to Norco movies

Many people interested in love stories read books and others go to movies. One of the best love stories I’ve ever heard was in a church.

I attended the wake of Mrs. Daisy Rushing last week at the St. Joan of Arc Church. As I was leaving, two ladies I knew said hello and I stopped to talk.

Behind them was a couple. I introduced myself and asked their names.

“I’m Vernon Fabre,” the man said.

“And who is the lovely lady next to you?”

“That’s my wife, May. We’ve been married 69 years and we’re both 88 years old!”

That surprised me, because they didn’t look their age.

They proudly shared that they have four sons, 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

During our conversation, Mr. Fabre said that they met in the sixth grade. She went to St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School and he was at Destrehan. The love and respect they had for each other was evident.

He smiled as he said, “Our first date was organized by our religion teacher who took us to a movie at the Royal Theater in Norco. The movie was “The Life of Christ.”

I’m sure they enjoyed the movie and lived their lives as God commands in John 15:17: “These things I command you, that you love one another.”

As I was about to leave, I shared how much I enjoyed meeting them and asked permission to write this article. Reading or seeing movies about love stories can be entertaining, but the Fabre’s love story in real life was a blessing to me from God.
