NEW ORLEANS – Taylor Tregre has a chance of advancing to the National Jr. NBA Skills Challenge finals this June in New York City after sweeping the competition during a regional event.

Taylor represented St. John Parish Parks & Recreation during the New Orleans Pelicans Jr. NBA Skills Challenge on April 8 and was named winner of the 11U division.

The Jr. NBA Skills Challenge allows boys and girls ages 13 and younger to showcase their talents and sharpen their skills in five fundamentals of basketball: Passing, dribbling, defense, lay-ups, and shooting. Children had an opportunity to meet other young athletes from across the region while visiting the New Orleans Pelicans practice arena.

Taylor’s skills aren’t limited to basketball. She’s been an all-around athlete from the time she first hit a tee ball at 4 years old.

At 11 years old, Taylor now participates in basketball and flag football with St. John recreation and soccer with St. James recreation. Her favorite sport is softball, and she’s always on the road with the 007 travel team based out of St. Amant.

Taylor was named MVP for a softball game in Ruston last Spring, which allowed her to advance to the 2022 All-State tournament held in Alexandria.

“She spends a lot of time practicing both basketball and softball,” Taylor’s mother, Hope Tregre, said. “Even when she doesn’t have team practice, she’s spending a lot of time on her individual practice for hitting, catching and fielding, as well as practicing basketball in the yard with her daddy and her brother.”

Tregre is most proud of her daughter’s never-quit attitude.

“Even though she is hard on herself at times, and we’re hard on her because we know what she’s capable of, she doesn’t give up. She just keeps on trying,” Tregre said.

Taylor is an honor roll student at Gramercy Elementary and additionally participates in 4-H in St. James Parish. She looks forward to attending 4-H camp this summer.
