Living for today

I often think of my grandfather telling me that he would wake up at 4 o’clock in the morning. It’s a fact that the older you get, the earlier you go to bed and the earlier you wake up. I usually wake up at 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning. This morning, I woke up at 3:00 concerned about writing an article and making the deadline.

As I was reading the Bible, I kept thinking about what I would write. I know that while reading God’s Word, you should be focused on that only, but this morning I needed an article.

When I was finished reading, praying, and thinking about the plan for my day, I recalled a day in 1969. I was attending a bank marketing convention in Miami, Florida. The first day of the convention, the morning speaker was from Georgia State University. I don’t remember his name, but I still remember his opening remarks.

He shared that years ago, when hotels had elevator attendants, he and a group of men entered the elevator and were greeted by the elevator attendant with a smile and an enthusiastic “Good Morning!” One of the men, a little grumpy, said, “What’s so good about it?” The attendant quickly responded, “I’ve never lived this day before and I’m excited to see what God has in store for me today.” That’s been 54 years ago.

This morning, God reminded me to get excited about what He has in store for me today. Like most older people, I spend a lot of time reflecting on the past, wondering about the future, and forgetting about the most precious gift – today. The Bible says to fret not about tomorrow, for we know not what the future holds. I’ve heard it said that we should plan our lives as though we’d live forever, but live today as it would be our last.

Today, I’ve decided to be excited, relax, and see what God has in store for me.
