September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. The American Library Association’s annual campaign to encourage patrons to enroll for a library card began nearly 30 years ago. Signing up for a library card at the St. John the Baptist Parish Library System is an easy process. Patrons who meet the criteria, such as being a resident of the parish, own parish property, work in the parish or are enrolled in school within the parish, may apply for a card.
A library is a temple of learning, and a library card is the key that unlocks a treasure chest full of knowledge and information. Library card users have a multitude of privileges that they can take full advantage of with their cards, such as access to books, electronic resources, educational databases, online tutoring, video courses, test preparation and so much more. Patrons can stop by any of our locations to receive a newly designed card.
All branches of the library system will be participating in Library Card Sign-Up Month. This year’s theme is “Find Your Voice at the La La La Library.” Children, ages 0 to 11, will receive a special packet when they get their first library card. The value of a library card is limitless, and most children become lifelong readers after becoming a card holder. “La La La Library Bookmarks,” will be hosted all month long. Children, ages 6 to 11, are welcome to pick-up a grab-and-go bag, including items to decorate a one-of-a-kind bookmark. All library branches will be selecting a “Reader of the Week.” Patrons are invited to write down three titles of books they have read on a log-in sheet, and then place the sheet in our Reader of the Week box. A name will be drawn to receive a certificate, a prize and a picture on our Wall of Fame for all to see. Winners will be announced every Friday. The movie “Sing” will be shown at the Reserve Library on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m., Garyville Library on Saturday, September 17 at 11 a.m., and Edgard Library on Friday, September 23 at 2 p.m. Parents/caregivers, please bring your children to our library branches to participate in these programs. For more information about Library Card Sign-Up Month events, please call your local branch.
