INDEPENDENCE—Lamonica Road in Independence will be closed to truck traffic for the next two weeks.
Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said Lamonica Road, which connects LA 40 west of Independence to East Evans Road will be closed to truck traffic from now through approximately May 18 while overlay work is progressing on West Fontana Lane. Earlier this week the contractor closed the north end of West Fontana Lane to begin the overlay process on that heavily-traveled street. At that time, East Evans was temporarily authorized for truck traffic
Miller said construction vehicles have been trying to use Lamonica Road to access the gravel pit on East Evans due the closure of West Fontana Road. Miller said Lamonica Road is not equipped to handle that level of traffic.
“Lamonica Road is too narrow and has several sharp turns at intersections; therefore, it is not feasible to use that route for truck and trailer traffic,” Miller said.
Truck traffic will be re-routed to LA 1063 to access East Evans Road during the construction period, Miller said.
“We apologize for the inconvenience but this is a much-needed step as we complete the overlay on West Fontana Lane,” Miller said. He indicated that if weather conditions remain permissible, work could be completed in just a couple weeks.
