EDGARD – The West St. John Rams returned home this week to host a district game against the Metairie Park Country Day Cajuns. The Rams would be challenged to slow down the Cajun offense led by Tulane commit, Justin Ibieta.

West St. John surprised the Cajuns by opening the game with an onside kick. The Rams recovered the kick and capitalized by scoring a touchdown on a Wantrell Williams 9-yard touchdown scamper.

Country Day answered by mixing up the run and pass on a long drive that resulted in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ibieta to Williams. The Cajuns took the lead 7-6. Country Day scored again at the end of the first quarter when Ibieta and Williams hooked up again for a 4-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead 14 – 6.

Then West St. John started to find success with the running game. They capped off a long drive with a touchdown run by D’kyri Jackson. The Rams trailed 14 – 12 at the end of the first quarter.

Country Day added to their lead with another Ibieta touchdown pass. The Cajuns led at halftime 21 – 12.

West St. John struck quickly in the third quarter on a 47-yard touchdown run by D’Kyri Jackson. After another failed 2-point conversion, the Rams trailed 21-18 in the third quarter.

The Rams took their first lead of the game 26-21 on a 57-yard touchdown run by Wantrell Williams. The lead did not last long as Ibieta tossed another touchdown pass. Country Day took the lead 28 – 26. The Cajuns continued to have trouble tackling the shifty West St. John running backs. Kaejean Kindrick broke free on a 41-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 34 – 28 lead.

Country Day took the lead again 35 – 34 on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Ibieta to Williams with only four minutes to play in the game. With less than a minute in the game, the Rams scored the game winning touchdown on an 8-yard Wantrell Williams run for the 42- 35 victory.

West St. John will take advantage of a Bye week next week and prepare for a district battle with rival Riverside on Nov. 1
