Keller: Beverly Harris lives “Service Before Self” motto

One of the most exciting services that Get High on Life has provided over the years is conducting peer support groups in high schools.

Over the past 35 years, we’ve conducted weekly groups that originated in St. John Parish and expanded into St. Charles, St. James, Ascension, Lafourche, Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes.

The groups were called SWAC (Students Who Are Concerned) and were strictly voluntary.

The first group, which started in the middle 1980s, was at East St. John High School and initiated by Mrs. Beverly Harris.

Under her leadership, with much enthusiasm, it was one of the most popular groups at the school.

As the groups spread to other parishes, God used them to promote His ministry of Get High on Life.

Over the years, Mrs. Harris has always been one of the biggest supporters of Get High on Life.

I will always be grateful for her friendship and concern for other people.

She is now retired after 42 years in the school system and remains active in her community.

She belongs to numerous organizations and, because of her giving spirit, is always in a leadership role.

As a member of Rotary Club of LaPlace, she lives life according to its motto, which is “Service Before Self.”

The Bible says that in order to be great among many, you must be a servant to all. Mrs. Harris has served God, family and community unselfishly.

She is an example of how Christians should live.

I thank God for putting her in my life.
