Keller: Pure thoughts produce pure hearts

We have heard many times that our tongue can get us in trouble. We have also heard that what comes from the heart, reaches the heart.
In other words, what we speak with our tongue actually comes from our heart. The tongue is only a tool that is used to spread good or evil.
There are various kinds of hearts described in the Bible — a scheming heart, a cunning, sensual heart, a wise heart, a deceptive heart, a hurting heart, a tranquil heart, a righteous heart, a glad heart, a haughty heart, a heart of rage, an envious heart and a pure heart.
My prayer is for God to purify my heart. Yes, I want a pure heart. Some of you reading this, who know me, must be saying, “Boy, God has a lot of work to do.”
I fully agree, but let me remind you that God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
Keep in mind that the tongue only speaks what’s in our heart and the condition of our heart depends on our thoughts.
The Word of God says, “For as he thinks within himself, so he is.” We are what we think we are.
The Bible says that the heart of man is wicked, but it also says that we can be delivered from a hard, cold heart. I’m reminded of a person who once compared the heart of man to a bag of dirty laundry.
The bag might look OK, but the inside is full of filth. To solve the problem of dirty clothes, we need to wash them using a detergent.
The heart of man is black and needs to be cleaned. The cleansing power is the Blood of Jesus.
As we approach the Christmas season, what a better gift to give yourself than pure thoughts that will produce a pure heart and allow the tongue only to be used in a godly way.
