The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District held its Spring Showcase of Music on May 9.

Fifth Ward Elementary School students Damarco Dillon and Tia Vicknair play cellos during the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District’s Spring Showcase of Music.

Instrumental and vocal music students from Emily C. Watkins Elementary School, John L. Ory Communication Arts Magnet School, LaPlace Elementary School, Fifth Ward Elementary School, Garyville-Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School, East St. John High School, East St. John Preparatory Academy, Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School, West St. John Elementary School and East St. John High School participated.

Making its public debut was the district’s Orchestral Strings Program, which started this year at Fifth Ward Elementary.

The program, which teaches students string instruments such as the cello and violin, is the only such program in the River Parishes.

With the help of the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and the CMA Foundation, over the past five years the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District has reinvigorated its music programs and now employs 10 full-time music teachers with music programs at every school.

Students learn piano beginning in kindergarten and are exposed to a variety of instruments.

The Spring Showcase of Music is a chance for students to share with their parents and the community what they have learned in their music classes throughout the year.
