LAPLACE — Authorities said Deputy Stephen Hughes, hospitalized following a pursuit and crash Wednesday morning, is in stable condition today (March 22).
The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office made the announcement this morning, adding the suspect from Wednesday’s pursuit — 27-year-old LaPlace resident Dendzel Gregoire — was arrested and booked with flight from an officer, resisting an officer and contempt of court.
Gregoire is being held in lieu of an $1,839 bond.
Hughes has been with the department for seven years. Authorities said he was injured while in pursuit of a possible armed suspect along the bank of Vicknair Canal.
The officer observed the suspect on foot, fleeing the area along a canal bank, which led to a pursuit and crash into an intersecting canal.
Emergencies medical services arrived on scene and administered aid to the officer, who police said sustained a broken arm, broken ribs, broken jaw and other injuries.
Police said Hughes was taken to a New Orleans hospital for treatment.
