Keller: Display joy while giving to others

The Bible says that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Without joy it’s impossible to be a successful witness and help people as we are commanded to do.

Proverbs 15:15 reads: “All the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.”

The people who enjoy life the most are those who continually give freely what God has blessed them with. Jesus teaches us that we are more blessed when we give than when we receive.

I’ve read and heard it said that a giver brings life, like watering a plant so it can grow, but a taker is like sucking the water from the soil, leaving the plant to die and affecting the soil.

My experience is that the majority of people, including Christians, are takers and not givers. Be assured that as I speak of being a giver, I’m not talking about money or material things.

What most hurting people need is to know that someone cares about them.

Without the joy of the Lord, people will have a hard time receiving what you say. Keep in mind that it’s the Spirit that touches people and not our charisma and personality.

Being a giver, with the direction of the Holy Spirit, is a winning combination  that pleases God.
