Freezing temperatures possible for weekend

LAPLACE – As a result of light rain mixing with incoming cold air, there is a potential for very light sleet or freezing rain to impact the region Friday night and into Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service; however, does not predict snow or a heavy accumulation of winter precipitation for the Greater New Orleans area, including St. John the Baptist Parish at this time.
Temperatures are forecasted to fall into the 30s and 40s for the weekend before a warming trend begins next week.
Near freezing temperatures are anticipated to begin impacting the area as early as Friday afternoon and expected to remain through Sunday.
Although severe weather or heavy rainfall is not probable, residents should make necessary preparations at home for possible freezing temperatures and be cautious when driving on roadways as standing water could freeze and become hazardous.
Protective Tips:
- Pets and plants should be brought inside; cover outside plants
- Other animals or livestock should be sheltered in areas with non-frozen drinking water
- Insulate outdoor faucets with faucet covers, rags, paper or trash bags, or plastic foam
- Space heaters should be 36 inches from anything flammable and off when not in use
- Maintain proper ventilation for all fuel-burning devices
- Keep flashlights, extra food and water and other safety items readily available
- Maintain contact with the elderly and those considered at risk
- Dress warmly and keep exposed skin covered if outdoors
The Office of Emergency Preparedness will continue to monitor the weather forecasts for updates and changes. Public Works’ and Utilities’ Crews are on hand in the event issues arise.
