Lack of seat belt factor in fatal St. John crash

LAPLACE – A 60-year-old Reserve woman died today (Dec. 22), the result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash on Airline Highway.

Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated the fatal crash on near Emmett Court at 5 a.m. today.

The initial investigation indicated Catherine Murray was driving a 2015 Ford Focus and was exiting a private drive when she began to cross the northbound lanes in an attempt to turn left on Airline Highway southbound.

A 2010 Toyota XD, driven by 27-year-old Travis Richard of Destrehan, was traveling on Airline Highway north in the left lane and struck the driver’s side of the Ford.

Murray and Richard were taken to Ochsner Health Center – River Parishes. Murray was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Richard suffered moderate injuries.

Murray was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Richard was properly restrained. Troopers do not suspect impairment; however, toxicology results are pending and autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation, and no arrests or citations were reported.
