Keller: Always exercise your freedom

FREEDOM! What a refreshing and positive word.

It is defined as the state or quality of being free; exemption or liberation from the control of some other person or some arbitrary power; liberty, independence.

Bondage, on the other hand, is a negative and depressing word. It’s a form of slavery, subjection to some force or influence.

I believe all people have a desire to be free and at peace with themselves, but the majority are in bondage to someone or something.

Personally, I was in bondage to alcohol, sin, religion and politics for many years. Today, because of the Grace of God and my acceptance of the free gift of salvation, I’m free at last.

The reason for this article is because of the many people I know, including Christians, who are in bondage to political powers. The other day, I ran into a friend of mine who has a political job. In our discussion about the upcoming election, he said, “I have to vote for the person who signs my check.”

He is a Christian, not in name only, but a man of integrity and strong convictions in the teachings of Christ.

I challenged him and said, “You evidently don’t believe everything in the Bible, especially in Galatians, Chapter 5: 1 which speaks of Christian liberty. It reads: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

I continued, “I know you are a good, conscientious employee and you earn your pay. If that’s so, you are not obligated to anyone.”

I compliment you on exercising your right to vote, but keep in mind, your Christian responsibility is to vote for the best person for the job and not for selfish interest.

In parting, I said, “The Bible also says don’t ever fear what man can do to you, but fear God in all decisions.”

My message to all the people who are in bondage to a person or political power is to be set free and have peace and a clear conscience.
