LAPLACE — Serving as a counselor at St. Charles Catholic High School’s youth football camp is one of the things that kept SCC student John Campbell busy this summer.

“It was a lot of fun to help the kids and watch them become better football players while having fun,” he said, adding he attended the camp as a child.

Campbell, the son of John and Susan Campbell of LaPlace, also traveled this summer to Mississippi for his second year at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp.

One of the FCA leaders at SCC, Campbell said the club is his favorite.

“Being an FCA leader is about encouraging others to make the right choices on and off the field,” he said, adding FCA meets every Thursday night and meetings are “a good break during the week to put up work and school and get close to God.”

Campbell has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments on and off SCC’s football field. He started at SCC as an eighth grader, which he said gave him the opportunity to jump right into everything SCC offers.

Now about to begin his last year in high school, Campbell takes AP and dual enrollment courses while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He is also a member of the school’s 30 Plus Club, organized to recognize students who have made at least a 30 on the ACT.

Campbell is a member of SCC’s Retreat Tem, National Honor Society, Science Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club and French Club. He will serve as SCC’s Senior Class President in Student Council. The role should come naturally to him, as he also served as the Sophomore Class President.

A parishioner and usher at Ascension of Our Lord, Campbell has served as an SCC Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and has also volunteered as part of the Louisiana Children’s Museum Super Science Saturday, AOL Bible Camp and delivered Thanksgiving Day meals.

Campbell also participates in football and tennis. He was part of the 2011 state championship football team and was a state qualifier in tennis his sophomore year.

Other awards rounding out Campbell’s achievements are SCC Outstanding 10th and 11th Grade Young Man (as voted on by teachers), a Bronze Award for Service, Alpha honor Roll and Principal’s List and District Literary Rally.

Lessons learned at SCC, Campbell said, haven’t been limited to the classroom.

“Playing football under Coach Monica has taught me many life lessons about working hard, setting goals and accomplishing them,” he said. “It has forced me to be organized with regards to balancing my school work and after-school activities.”

Campbell said he appreciates his parents’ active involvement in the school as well.

At SCC, he said he has met a lot of friends through football and enjoys the family atmosphere the school provides. Campbell plans to attend LSU and major in biological engineering and someday hopes to attend medical school.
