For 100 years, American Commercial Lines has moved customers’ cargo on the inland waterways, beginning by transporting coal on the Kentucky River.
Since then ACL has grown into one of the largest and most diversified marine transportation services companies in the nation.
With a fleet of approximately 2,000 barges, powered by more than 115 towboats, ACL is one of the nation’s largest liquid cargo and dry cargo barge lines.
Headquartered in Jeffersonville, Ind., ACL is powered by approximately 2,200 employees, and its transportation services unit operates fleets and terminals throughout the inland waterways network.
ACL’s Armant facility, located in Vacherie, includes five fleet boats, 325 fleet spots, nearly 80 employees and offers a strategic location to ensure efficient turns of ACL boats. From Armant, ACL distributes barges to local grain and liquid docks.
ACL’s operating priorities include the safety of its team, the marine environment and the cargo it transports.
The organization’s commitment is evident by its industry-leading safety record.
ACL attributes this success to enhanced training, a comprehensive vetting program, a culture of personal responsibility and mutual care and an unwavering commitment to safety from the wheelhouse and deck to the terminal and office.
A total of 71 ACL boats were recognized by the Chamber of Shipping of America in 2015 with the prestigious Jones F. Devlin Award for Safety. Barges are the safest form of transportation, with fewer spills and injuries than railroads or trucks, and ACL is an industry leader in safety performance.
ACL partners with and participates in industry and government programs that foster continuous improvement in safety performance with expanded resources, standardized measurements, reporting requirements and proven management systems.
As ACL’s 100th year concludes, there is a strong future in view and long legacy to build upon.
