Someone recently asked, “Why does God give us grandchildren?”  My response was something I heard years ago.

“God gives us grandchildren to correct some of the mistakes we made with our children.”

That conversation made me reflect on the many mistakes I made while supporting my family. I did a good job of supporting them. They had all the necessities of life — a nice house, good schools and the best of material possessions.

Yes, I did a good job of supporting my family, but I wish I had concentrated my efforts more on raising my children. We attended church regularly, and I participated in all the religious functions, but failed to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

God was faithful in protecting my children because of my godly wife.  I concentrated on putting bread on the table rather than seeing things from God’s perspective and shaping their lives to become Christian testimonies.

Jeanne and I have been blessed with 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. R. A. Toney, the great Bible teacher once said, “A man’s success as a Christian leader cannot be determined until one sees his grandchildren.”

With my youngest grandchild being 19, the influence I now have on them is limited. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to hopefully instill some godly character in each of them.

Realizing that each one is different, I pray that they all allow Jesus to be their Savior and Lord of their lives. It’s only then will they become the godly men and women for which they were created.

God described grandchildren as a crown of glory for old men. He has blessed me abundantly.
