LAPLACE — It’s going to take more than a runaway truck driving through its storefront to hold down Children’s World.

The school uniform shop located at 924 Carrollwood Drive is set to reopen at 10 a.m. Monday, according to owner Randy Lilly.

The business has been shuttered for two months after an incapacitated driver lost control of his vehicle and plowed through the business’ front wall before coming to rest inside the store.

“It’s been a bumpy road just getting permits and this, that and the other, but the construction work has gone pretty good,” Lilly said.

“Everything will be ready to roll (Monday). We’re redoing the inside of the store trying to get some shelving units together. I’ve got shipments coming in. That is why I want to open up on (Monday). It gives me time to get inventory on the shelves and prepared.”

A call reporting a wreck with injuries at the store was made at 5:20 p.m. March 1 to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Dane Clement said the man driving the truck had a history of seizures, and a responding officer documented the wreck as “due to illness.”

Clement said the driver voluntarily submitted blood for drug and alcohol analysis immediately following the crash, adding the measure was taken out of procedure and precaution.  The blood analysis by the Louisiana State Police Laboratory has not been completed, and no arrests were made or citations issued.

The wreck took place during off hours on a Sunday, and Lilly said he heard about the collision through Facebook.

“It was bad that it happened, but at least we were closed,” he said.

“If it was during normal business hours, it would have been terrible, because people would have been in the store. If it happened during back-to-school season, the store would have been full of people.”

Lilly said he expects the business to bounce back better than ever, because “we’ve got no choice but to make it.”
