MANCHAC — A Marrero man died in a fiery rear-end collision Thursday afternoon on Interstate 55 north of LaPlace.

Louisiana State Police Troop B spokesman Trooper Johnnie Brown reported that at 1:11 p.m. Thursday, a 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer was legally parked on the right shoulder of northbound I-55. The vehicle’s emergency warning triangles were properly placed, Brown added.

A northbound 2006 Ford F-150 driven by Elias Jones, 53, of Marrero, rear-ended the parked truck and burst into flames.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office. The Freightliner driver was not injured.

Troopers are investigating the accident’s possible cause and whether alcohol might have been a factor.
