EDGARD – Memories are not forgotten by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who remembered the wife of famed Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, who is interred at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Edgard.

The plaque honoring Caroline Deslonde Beauregard, four years in the planning, was unveiled by Alison Wallis of the UDG and Genevieve Walgamotte, president of the Louisiana Division, Children of the Confederacy.

Among the 50 or so in attendance were the president of Louisiana Division, UDC, Lou Ann Rigby, New Orleans Chapter 72 president Lynda Moreau and Beauregard Camp 130, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The Beauregards were married only three weeks when he was summoned to duty and soon fired the opening shots at Fort Sumpter to start the Civil War. She died in 1864, without ever seeing her husband again.

She is interred in the Slidell family tomb in Edgard.
