Business BriefsL’Observateur / July 8, 1998Hospital names Leake Nurse of the YearLAPLACE – River Parishes Hospital recently named Bridgette Leake, a registered nurse in the emergency room, as the 1997 Nurse of the Year.

Leake has been employed with the hospital for more than four years, previously serving as a nurse technician. She received her associate’sdegree in nursing in 1995 from the University of New York Regents College.

Business Association meeting tonight

Welch named president of River Parishes CC

BATON ROUGE – The Board of Trustees for the University of Louisiana System has appointed Dr. Joe Ben Welch, president ofMiddle Georgia College, as president of River Parishes Community College.

Dr. Welch was selected from an initial list of 51 applicants. AZachary native, he received degrees from McNeese State University, Lamar University and Louisiana Tech University. He hasserved as president of Middle Georgia College since 1989.

Included among his many accomplishments as CEO are revision of the institutional assessment process, reorganization and streamlining of the administrative organization which realized a $750,000 saving in the annual operating costs of the institution, development of a comprehensive master plan, completion of capital improvement projects totaling almost $4 million and creation of an Academic Support Center.

As CEO at Lamar University-Orange he developed a comprehensive master plan and was instrumental in the drafting and passage of legislation creating the Lamar University System.

The 16 member Board of Trustees oversees the daily operation of 12 other colleges and universities in the State.

River Parishes Community College was created through legislation in the 1997 Regular Session as a comprehensive community college to other occupational/technical, developmental, and collegiate level transfer education to students residing in the River Parishes region. The College is to begin offering classes in the fall, 1999.

Schexnayder attends training conference
