Peace officers remembered during 16th memorial service

HAHNVILLE – The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No.15, in cooperationwith the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office, hosted the 16th annual memorialservices to Louisiana peace officers who died during the past year.

The program was held May 15 in front of the St. Charles Parish Courthouse.Among those present was St. Charles Deputy Morris Cavaliere Jr., whoseson, Morris III, a New Orleans Police Officer, died April 26.

“You haven’t ‘lost’ anything,” Lodge past president Warren LeBeauf told Cavaliere, “because when you lose something you don’t know where it is.”Among those offering prayers were Justice of the Peace L.J. Frickey; theRev. Dr. Isaiah Franklin Jr., pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, St. Rose, andZion Travelers Church, Reserve; and Dr. Gary McCall, pastor of Bible CenterChurch, Luling.

Other Louisiana peace officers recognized were Officer Frank J. Grice,East Jefferson Levee Board Police, died May 7, 1997, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Billy W. McIntosh, died Oct. 1, 1997, and Louisiana StateTrooper George D. Johnston, died Nov. 17, 1997.The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office also recognized those officers who havedied in the past five years, including: Sal Berreda, Andrew Chapman, Lawrence Dasch, Charles “Boston” Faucheux, Leon Holmes, Frank Lawson, Craig LeRay, Joseph Marino, Matt Matherne, Lawrence “L.T.” St. Amant,George Stanley and Alan Torregano.

Sheriff Greg Champagne reminded officers present they are constantly on his mind and in his heart. He also recognized Clerk of Court Charles Oubreand 29th Judicial District Judges Robert Chaisson and Emile St. Pierre.Also attending was former sheriff Herb LeRay, father of Craig.

At the close of the service, an honor guard consisting of Sgt. Mark Candies,Deputy Laura Foman and Deputy Shantrell Byrd laid a wreath at the monument in front of the parish courthouse. A 21-gun salute was fired byan honor detail from the American Legion Spillway Post 195.
