Comets’ Price Leads District 9-2A Baseball Team

LAPLACE – District champion St. Charles Catholic and district runners-upRiverside also placed one-two in the number of players placed on the All- District 9-2A baseball released recently.

First baseman/pitcher John Price was selected as the district’s most valuable player. Joining Price on the all-district team were pitchersCourtney Bonura and Brandon Laiche, catcher Jason Gonzales, infielders Jonathan Clement and Steven Faucheux and outfielders Wayne Stein and Ty Monica.

Price, a junior, batted .438 with three home runs and 15 runs batted in indistrict play.

Bonura, a junior, was 3-0 in district play with a 3.76 earned run averageand 30 strikeouts in 26 innings. Laiche, also a junior, went 4-0 in districtaction with a 1.74 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 20 innings.Gonzales, a senior, batted .500 in 10 district games with 17 RBIs and 12runs scored. Clement, a senior second baseman, batted .429 in districtwith eight runs and nine RBIs. Faucheux, a junior third baseman, batted.400 with one home run, 10 runs scored and 10 RBIs. Stein, a junior, batted.507 with three home runs, 15 runs scored and 15 RBIs in district play.Monica batted .387 with 13 runs scored. St. Charles Catholic coach Frank Monica was named the District 9-2Acoach of the year after leading the Comets to the district title with a 9-1 record in his first year as the team’s coach. The Comets advanced to theClass 2A state championship game before losing to Pope John Paul II, 12- 7.

Riverside placed pitchers Joey Poirrier and Casey Duhe, infielders Joel Ortiz, Dustin Zimmer and Sean Delaneuville and outfielders Anson Matherne and Ryan Rome on the all-district team.

Poirrier, a junior, went 3-0 in district with a 3.92 ERA and 22 strikeoutsin 19 2/3 innings. Duhe, also a junior, had a 4-1 record with a .85 ERA and36 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings.

Ortiz, a senior first baseman, batted .360 in district with one home run,12 RBIs and nine runs scored. Zimmer, a junior shortstop, led the districtwith four home runs and added a .531 batting average and 16 RBIs.Delaneuville, a freshman third baseman, tied Gonzales for the district lead with 17 RBIs to go along with a .467 batting average and two home runs.Matherne, a senior, batted .556 to lead the district and added 13 RBIs and13 runs scored. Rome, a junior, batted .433 with 12 runs scored.Filling out the All-District 9-2A team were St. Martin’s catcher JeffStrahan and infielder Nick Pappas and Ridgewood outfielder Bucky Kase.

Named to the honorable mention team were St. Martin’s Jeb Bauer, WestSt. John’s Torrian Thomas and Brian Lumar, Ridgewood’s Bryson LeBlanc,Keith Champagne and Chad Cain, Ecole Classique’s L.J. Trasher and DonMcMahon, St. Charles Catholic’s Brian Horvath and Riverside’s GaryEntremont.
