Sheriff: Feud dating back to ’14 killing led to weekend shootings

RESERVE — Little cooperation from those intimately involved with a violent feud dating back to last year has authorities fearing violence that erupted in St. John the Baptist Parish last weekend will end in someone’s death.

“This incident, I believe, is a certain group of young men who look like they will just not stop trying to kill each other,” St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre said Tuesday morning.

Tregre’s frustration was obvious as he spoke about shootings reported Saturday night in Reserve and Sunday morning in LaPlace he said detectives believe are tied to a blood feud that began with a 2014 homicide near Joe Parquet Circle in LaPlace.

The latest victim was shot in the ankle Saturday night after leaving a party at LaPlace Elementary School that was attended by more than 500 people, authorities said.

“We have no cooperation,” Tregre said. “If the victim doesn’t want to speak with us or is not being truthful and no witnesses are coming forward, I don’t know what (law enforcement) agency could solve that.”

Authorities first responded at 10:20 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of Belle Pointe Boulevard in Reserve after a young man was reported shot.

Deputies were already in the area helping disperse a large crowd after several fights occurred as people were leaving a party at East St. John Elementary School.

According to Tregre, the victim sustained a single gunshot wound above his ankle and was taken to a New Orleans-area hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Deputies identified the shooting victim as a 23-year-old Gretna resident.

“The (victim) that (was shot) is friends with people who are having these feuds,” Tregre said. “We are still interviewing him. He says he doesn’t know anything, was walking and got shot.”

Authorities also reported a vehicle parked on the driveway of a Belle Pointe Boulevard residence was hit with a projectile Saturday night.

The shooting violence continued a few hours later when deputies responded to a shooting at 6:03 a.m. Sunday of a home in the 2300 block of Yorktowne Drive in LaPlace.

“Deputies saw multiple gunshot holes in the walls, ceiling, cabinets and rear door,” Tregre said. “Nine people were in the house. No one was injured.”

Tregre said the house was not picked accidentally and a male resident there was connected to the violence that occurred following Saturday’s party.

“(The shooters) knew who their target was and they found out where he lived and they shot into that house,” Tregre said.“That was done purposely, so it is jeopardizing the entire neighborhood.

“We’ve canvassed, we’ve talked to neighbors and we’re trying to find video. A few people have come forward, but it is not enough for us to make an arrest right now. I want them off the street, but we can’t do it alone.”

Later Sunday morning, deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked in a field at the end of South River Pointe Drive, which is near the area of Saturday night’s shooting.

The rear passenger window was shattered by a single gunshot.

A computer check of the vehicle, Tregre said, revealed it is registered to the same address as the Yorktowne Drive residence that was riddled with bullets Sunday morning.

Anyone with information concerning the shootings is asked to call the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office TIPS line at 985-359- TIPS or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Residents with information about the shootings who call Crimestoppers do not have to testify in court and may qualify for a cash reward. Residents can also submit tips at stjohnsheriff.org/submitatip.php.

“The two  guys that were shot in Belle Point a couple of weeks ago where nobody saw anything, (the most recent violence has) something to do with that,” Tregre said.

“It also has something to do with an unsolved homicide that took place in Joe Parquet last year.”
