Wildcats, Comets facing rough volleyball start

RESERVE — The St. Charles Catholic volleyball team went on the road this week and felt a few bumps.

The Lady Comets lost a four-game set to Terrebonne Tuesday in Houma, then fell to Ponchatoula in straight sets Thursday. That puts the Comets at 2-5 on the season.

Last weekend’s tournament at Broadmoor went well, with St. Charles taking a 25-10, 25-10 win over Northeast Sept. 3. The team later dropped a pair of losses to Springfield and St. Martinville.

At Terrebonne, St. Charles dropped the first two games of the non-district match, 25-9 and 25-16 before rallying for a 25-19 win in the third set.

The Comets were able to take advantage of a flurry of hitting errors by the Tigers in that game, but dropped the final set 25-12.

At Pontchatoula, St. Charles lost the first game 25-14. The Comets put up a fight in the second set before losing 25-20, but they lost the third game 25-9.

“We are still transitioning to new players working with each other,” coach Meg Ericksen said. “It’s going to be a struggle at first, but we have the most dedicated group of athletes that, I’m sure, will pick it up quickly and bounce back.”

St. Charles will host Lutcher Tuesday and will travel to East St. John High Wednesday.

East St. John coach Jarranisha Allen is also feeling some frustration. Her team is 0-5 following a valiant effort Tuesday against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.

The Wildcats lost 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 11-15.

Chardae Berthelot led the team with 19 kills and seven aces. Jamayia Haynes had four aces and 16 assists.

“As a team, we have to stick together,” Allen said. “We can’t allow refs to determine whether we win or loss. We just have to start on top and finish on top.”

The Wildcats have a busy schedule this week. They travel to Academy of Our Lady Monday, host Springfield Tuesday, St. Charles Wednesday and will compete in the Brusly tournament beginning Thursday.

Riverside Academy, meanwhile, had a relatively light week with only two matches. The Lady Rebels took a hard-fought 3-1 victory over East Ascension, 25-18, 25-27, 25-17, 25-11.

Although the Rebels remained undefeated overall, it was the first time the team dropped a set this season.

Sydney Joseph continues to lead the team. She had 14 kills, 12 digs and five aces in the match. Briley Becker had 12 kills and 11 digs.

The Rebels defeated Higgins High Friday afternoon to improve to 6-0.

Joseph had 11 kills and 5 digs. Becker had 6 aces.

Riverside will travel to Landry-Walker Monday and to Ursuline Academy Wednesday.
