St. John Parish voters approve millage renewals

LAPLACE — St. John the Baptist Parish saw a turnout of approximately 8.7% of voters during the November 13 election. Residents who exercised their right to vote approved several millage renewals for St. John Parish services, generating funding for animal control, recreation, parish road lighting and teacher salaries in the St. John Parish School District. Voters also approved a millage rededication to expand drainage efforts, as well as a $58 million bond that will lead to important upgrades to Parish drinking water systems.

The breakdown of each item on the ballot was as follows:

  • Parishwide Proposition No. 1 of 4 — .75 Mills Renewal – PC – 10 Yrs.
    • YES – 62%, 1,599 votes
    • NO – 38%,  995 votes
  • Parishwide Proposition No. 2 of 4 — 2.25 Mills Renewal – PC – 10 Yrs.
    • YES – 61%, 1,584 votes
    • NO – 39%, 1,013 votes
  • Parishwide Proposition No. 3 of 4 — 7 Mills Reded. – PC
    • YES – 66%, 1,717 votes
    • NO – 34%, 867 votes
  • Parishwide Proposition No. 4 of 4 — $58M Bond – PC – 20 Yrs.
    • YES – 62%, 1,601 votes
    • NO – 38%, 967 votes
  • Parishwide Road Lighting District No. 1 — 3.83 Mills Renewal – PC – 10 Yrs.
    • YES – 70%, 1,823 votes
    • NO – 30%, 766 votes
  • Parishwide School District No. 1 — 3.47 Mills Renewal – SB – 10 Yrs.
    • YES – 64%, 1,652 votes
    • NO – 36%, 928 votes

  • CA NO. 1 (ACT 131, 2021 – HB 199) — Authorizes streamlined electronic filing, remittance, and collection of sales and use tax
    • 56% of voters in St. John Parish voted “YES”
    • 52% of voters across Louisiana voted “NO”
  • CA NO. 2 (ACT 134, 2021 – SB 159) — Lowers maximum allowed rate of income tax and allows providing a deduction for federal income taxes
    • 62% of voters in St. John Parish voted “YES”
    • 54% of voters across Louisiana voted “YES”
  • CA NO. 3 (ACT 132, 2021 – SB 87) — Allows certain levee districts to levy an annual tax for certain purposes
    • 57% of voters in St. John Parish voted “YES”
