LULING, La. – In honor of Black History Month and this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” the Lafon Arts Center is thrilled to host an Artsperience event featuring a special workshop with Ailey II, the globally celebrated dance ensemble. The event is scheduled for Thursday, February 22nd, where students will have the opportunity to watch the performance from 10 to 11 AM and participate in the workshops from 12 to 1:30 PM. This educational initiative will involve students from Satellite Center, Harry Hurst Middle School, Albert Cammon Middle School, R.K. Smith Middle School, J.B. Martin Middle School, and Lakewood Elementary School.

This Artsperience workshop is part of a broader effort to deepen students’ engagement with the arts, offering them a unique chance to learn from Ailey II’s esteemed dancers. It aims to inspire creativity, movement, and an appreciation for the performing arts while emphasizing the significant contributions of African American artists to our cultural landscape.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ailey II to the Lafon Arts Center and extend this enriching experience to the students of St. Charles Parish Public Schools,” said Chris Aucoin-Melohn, Director of the Lafon Arts Center. “Through the power of dance, we aim to ignite passion, spark imagination, and cultivate a lifelong love for the arts among our students in St. Charles Parish. This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing inclusive, educational opportunities that transcend boundaries and enrich our community.” He also reminds us that every ticket matters at the Lafon Arts Center. “When you purchase a ticket to any of our performances you are not only going to enjoy an amazing show in a beautiful facility, but you will also be supporting the free programs the school district provides for every student in St. Charles Parish.”

Following the enriching workshops, Ailey II will take to the stage for a public performance at 7:30 PM, featuring their trademark blend of captivating choreography and emotive storytelling. As the second company of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II embodies Alvin Ailey’s vision, showcasing the vigor of the country’s best young dance talent and the creativity of prominent emerging choreographers.
