LULING — St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne is proud to announce a partnership with St. Charles Parish Public Schools under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Ken Oertling to offer an Introduction to Criminal Justice course for interested high school juniors and seniors in St. Charles Parish.

The Introduction to Criminal Justice course taught by Sheriff’s Office personnel and other legal professionals provides an overview of the criminal justice system including the functions and responsibilities of law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. Students complete units of study by participating in demonstrations, site visits, learning from experts in the field, and completing hands-on activities.

“I am excited for this partnership and helping students build a foundation in citizenship and law enforcement knowledge. In my years of experience, many citizens have a lack of understanding of our government, in particular how our criminal justice system works. I am hopeful the young students who attend the Introduction to Criminal Justice course will gain an understanding of how our criminal justice system operates and will spread that knowledge to others,” said Sheriff Champagne.

Dr. Oertling also shared his excitement for the opportunities provided by the new course. “We are proud of our long-standing, collaborative partnership with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office. They are recognized as one of the top law enforcement offices in the country, and we are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with them further,” commented Dr. Oertling. “Most of all, we are excited to provide a high-quality educational opportunity for students that introduces them to one of the most honorable professions in a way that capitalizes on experiential, hands-on learning

experiences from top experts in the profession.”
