Ponchatoula – This morning, shortly after 5:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA Hwy 22, near Rue Foret, in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 30-year-old Mathew Hennick of Killian.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Hennick was walking in the eastbound lane of LA Hwy 22. At the same time, a 2001 Ford F-350 was eastbound on LA Hwy 22. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford struck Hennick in the center of the eastbound lane of LA Hwy 22. After initial impact with the Ford, Hennick was then struck by a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C250 and a 2017 Ram 1500 that were also eastbound on LA Hwy 22 and directly behind the Ford.
Hennick sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. All drivers involved in the crash were both properly restrained and uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, toxicology samples were obtained from Hennick and all drivers for analysis.
Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain vigilant while on roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Pedestrians should cross roadways in well-lit, designated areas and should always walk facing traffic. These simple steps can enhance safety for pedestrians.
