LAPLACE — The LSU AgCenter, with sponsorship from St. John Farm Bureau and Tractor Supply Company, held our second annual home vegetable garden contest this spring. We had more participants this year and we were glad to see the contest growing. Two Louisiana Master Gardeners (LMGs), a neighboring Horticulture Agent, my kids, and I spent a day touring St. James and St. John Parishes to judge gardens in late May. (I abstain from voting to avoid bias, though.)

Every garden we saw was great, and some were downright impressive! Winners will get plaques and yard signs sponsored by St. John Farm Bureau. They’ll also receive gift buckets from Tractor Supply Company with some assorted gardening items such as hand tools and a mix of seeds.

Our winner for the adult small garden category is Bubby Haydel. He’s making the most of a modest space with containers he cut from large plastic barrels.

Medium adult garden winner is Camille Perret. He’s got a neatly kept garden around a chicken run / dog run on his family property. Speaking of family…Our youth garden winner is Emma Perret, granddaughter of Mr. Camille. She’s got a few rows of her own and did well presenting to our judges.

The 4-H garden winner is Amaya Wilson. She is growing her first garden this year in her yard. She was also proud to show it off to the judges and speak to them.

Special thanks to our LMGs Suzette Goodrow and Cheryl Durand; and St. Charles Parish Horticulture Agent Gabe LoCoco for judging. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who participated. If you didn’t enter this year, think about showing off your green thumb next spring! We’d love to see more of what St. John is growing!
