The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of two Independence residents following an ongoing investigation into the November 2022 shooting death of 22 year old Christopher Sibley of Fluker, La.

Chief Jimmy Travis says 22 year old Jywann Jones and 21 year old Tommy Stewart, both of Independence, La, have been charged with First Degree Murder in connection with the shooting.
As previously reported, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on White Oak Lane in Fluker around 8:30 PM on November 22, 2022. Upon arrival deputies located a black male, later identified as Sibley, laying in the street with a fatal gunshot wound.
Detectives were able to quickly identify Jones as a suspect, after he was dropped off at North Oaks Medical Center with an apparent gunshot wound to the arm. Jones was taken into custody at that time on Obstruction of Justice Charges and bonded out several days later, but remained the primary suspect in the homicide. A second suspect in the shooting, identified as Stewart, was said to have fled to an undisclosed address on Alligator Drive in Hammond, La. Detectives relocated to the residence with a search warrant but were unable to locate Stewart. Several days later, detectives received information that Stewart had fled to Alexandria, La and were able to pinpoint his exact location. On November 28, 2022 the Alexandria Police Department located Stewart at a hotel, after which he was transported back to Tangipahoa Parish where he was charged with First Degree Murder.
With Stewart behind bars, detectives were able to uncover more information that led to evidence indicating Jones actually took part in the shooting of Sibley, and a warrant for First Degree Murder was issued for his arrest. It was later determined that Jones fled the state after his release, and the assistance of the United States Marshal’s Office was sought in locating Jones.
On April 4, 2023, detectives with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and agents with the United States Marshal’s Office received information pertaining to the whereabouts of Jones. Law enforcement later responded once again to Alligator Drive in Hammond and placed Jones into custody after he surrendered himself to law enforcement without incident.
Subsequent to the arrest of Jones a search warrant was conducted on the residence, where detectives located approximately 2.1 pounds of marijuana, 84 vape cartridges containing THC, and a Taurus 9mm firearm which is not believed to be involved with the homicide.
Subsequent to the search warrant and the homicide investigation both subjects were charged as follows:
Jywan Jones – 22 years old (Independence, LA)
(1) count – First Degree Murder
(2) counts – Possession with intent to Distribute Schedule I Drugs
(1) count – Possession of a Firearm while possessing a CDS
(1) count – Drug Paraphernalia
(1) count – Illegal Discharge of a Firearm
(2) counts – Failure to Appear
(1) count – Obstruction of Justice (previously booked in November 2022)
Tommy Stewart – 21 years old (Independence, LA)
(1) count – First Degree Murder
(1) count – Obstruction of Justice
(2) counts – Possession with Intent to Distribute Schedule I Drugs
(2) counts – Possession of Schedule V Drugs
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the United States Marshal’s Office and the Alexandria Police Department for their assistance with apprehending these fugitives.
