LAPLACE— Recently crews completed the last portion of access road construction to the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain levee alignment. More than 14 miles of road were constructed through the swamp in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Additionally the installation of wick drains at the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain levee site will expedite the consolidation of the soil foundation.

Instead of the underground water going through the soil itself, the water goes through the wick drains and shoots up. Since the West Shore levee is being built in marsh land, this will allow the levee to “settle” more quickly.

The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project will provide 100 year level risk reduction to more than 60,000 residents in the area.
