Dance teams compete at American All-Star

LAFAYETTE — High school dance teams from St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes were represented at the American All-Star Competition held January 14-15 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Cajundome.

St. Charles Parish schools had a big weekend, with Destrehan and Hahnville taking home a host of awards.

Destrehan’s Desty Darlings finished first in Division I jazz, first in Division I hip-hop, first in Division I game day, and were named first overall/ state champions for all three categories. The Desty Darlings additionally received the coveted Sweepstakes Award for attaining the highest scores for their top two dances, Choreography Awards for jazz and hip-hop, and Technique Awards for jazz and game day.

Hahnville finished first in Division II open and second in Division II kick. They were named first overall/ state champions in open and third overall in kick. Hahnville also took home Technique and Choreography awards for their open performance and was named fourth in the state for the Sweepstakes Award.

Representing St. John Parish, the St. Charles Catholic Starsteppers finished second in Division II open, third in Division II kick, fifth in Division II pom, and had a superior rating in Division II jazz. The Riverside Academy Southern Sweethearts earned a superior rating in Division I pom, second in Division I open, fourth in Division I game day, and placed fifth overall in the open category.

Lutcher High School’s dance team also competed at the American All-Star competition, earning third in Division II game day, fourth in Division II pom, and fifth in Division II jazz.
