Springfield – On December 13, 2022, shortly after 9:00 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a vehicle crash involving a bicyclist on LA 42 near Giles Road in Springfield. This crash ultimately claimed the life of 59-year-old Perry Winder of Springfield.

The initial investigation revealed a 2018 Mazda 3 was traveling east on LA 42. At the same time, Winder was riding a Schwinn bicycle and turned left from Giles Road onto LA 42, entering the path of the Mazda as it was struck.

Winder, who was not wearing a safety helmet and whose bicycle was not equipped with lighting, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Impairment on the part of Winder is unknown and toxicology samples will be obtained for testing. Impairment is not suspected on the part of the driver of the Mazda. The investigation is ongoing.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that motorists can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials and required bicycle lighting increase your visibility and safety. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable and obey all traffic laws.
