SCC swim team places near top in Division III state championship

SULPHUR — St. Charles Catholic’s swim team was dominant at the Ochsner-LHSAA Division III Championship held November 16-17 in Sulphur, with the girls finishing in the top four and the boys claiming the state runner-up title.

E.D. White swept the floor in the boys’ events and finished first by a landslide with 465.50 points. The St. Charles Catholic boys placed second with 211 points, beating 16 other teams and narrowly overcoming University High.

In the girls’ events, St. Charles Catholic came in fourth among 23 teams with 255 points. The top three girls’ finishers were E.D. White, Episcopal and University High. There was a large margin of points between St. Charles Catholic and the fifth place finisher, Archbishop Hannan, which collected 166 points among the 22 girls’ events.

Notable placements in the Division III final events were as follows:

Senior Cameron Brady placed third in the boys’ 100-Yard Butterfly with a time of 58.38. The boys also placed second in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with contributions from Brady, Kyle Cannon, Daniel Joseph and Carson Weber. St. Charles Catholic finished third in two other boys’ relays. Weber, Carter Ory, Joshua Jensen and Matthew Schexnayder comprised the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay team. Ory, Schexnayder, Brady and Joseph swam in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.

On the girls’ side, senior Mia Oncale placed second in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.88. She also finished second in the 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 54.97, while senior Bella Marix placed third in the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:15.42.

The girls were just as successful in the relays with two third place finishes. The relay team of Hartley Faucheux, Baileigh Tregre, Shae Waguespack and Mia Oncale competed in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. Faucheux, Marix, Oncale and Katherine Chapman swam in the 200-Yard Medley Relay.
