New Orleans – On September 10, 2022, shortly before 1:30 am, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a single-vehicle crash on US 90B east, just east of General De Gaulle Drive. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 38-year-old Charles Garrett of New Orleans.
The initial investigation revealed that Garrett was driving a 2010 Cadillac CTS east on US 90B approaching the Crescent City Connection bridge. For reasons still under investigation, Garrett failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the roadway to the right before the Cadillac impacted a concrete traffic barrier. After the initial impact, the Cadillac traveled across all lanes of US 90B east and continued beyond the left shoulder before impacting a second concrete traffic barrier. After coming to rest near the middle of the roadway, the Cadillac became engulfed in flames.
Garrett, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment on the part of Garrett is unknown and routine toxicology results are pending.
Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Having a plan and making safe decisions could be the difference for tomorrow.
