On July 15, the Sheriff’s Office investigated multiple burglaries and released photos of 3 individuals who were burglarizing vehicles along Hwy 44 and the adjacent streets along Hwy 44, from Lutcher to Paulina. Through investigative means, detectives have been able to identify one of the individuals, Awan Lewis, 23 years old from Edgard and obtained an arrest warrant.

On August 8, 2022, at 8:15am, with the assistance of Louisiana State Police, Awan was taken into custody and arrested for the charges of R.S. 14:60 Aggravated Burglary, R.S. 14:67.15 Theft of a Firearm and R.S. 14:67.16 Identity Theft.

Detectives have also been able to link Awan to a shooting that occurred on February 7, 2021, on Old Vacherie Street, in Vacherie. Evidence that was collected at the scene of the shooting was processed and this evidence linked Awan to this crime. An arrest warrant for R.S. 14:55 Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property and R.S. 14:94 Illegal Use of Weapons was obtained and Awan was also arrested on these charges.
