LAPLACE — Louisiana Federal Credit Union will offer free, unlimited shredding from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18 at the LaPlace branch, located at 350 Belle Terre Blvd.
Shredding old documents is one of the tips LFCU offers to protect against identity theft. This includes shredding expired debit and credit cards, credit card solicitations, financial statements, or any other document that contains personal information or account numbers.
Other tips to protect against identity theft include reviewing credit reports once a year for mistakes or signs of fraud, keeping photo copies of credit cards in a safe place to cancel accounts if your wallet is stolen, creating strong passwords, and keeping your personal information private.
Never give out your social security number or account numbers over the phone or through email, LFCU warns. Always ask how your information will be used, if it will be kept confidential, and if another type of personal identifier can be used instead.
