Basketball teams honored by St. John School Board

The accomplishments of the East St. John boys’ and girls’ basketball teams in the 2022 playoffs were honored Thursday night at the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board meeting.
“We’re very proud of our coaches and our leaders who everyday go out and affect our young men and young women,” said Athletic Director Brandon Brown. “In the midst of all the adversity, through COVID, Hurricane Ida, not having a home school, not having a gym to play in, they believed in themselves and their team. Our players trust their coaches and their parents.”
Led by Coach Stasha James, the girls’ basketball team ended the season with an astounding record of 26 wins and four losses.
Members of the 2021-2022 girls basketball team include Jasmine Matthews, Kayla Green, Leyah Watson, Ashia Ward, A’myree Soniat, Alysha Soniat, Diamond Shorty, Shairie Joseph, Tramaya Richardson, Hannah Jackson, Randi Joseph, Tre’jae Alvis, Errie Cemelien and Kyla Cage.
The boys’ basketball team, led by Coach Antonio Broadway Sr., made it to the third round of the playoffs with 28 wins and nine losses.
In two seasons at East St. John, Coach Broadway has compiled a record of 51 wins and 16 losses.
The boys’ basketball team 2021-2022 roster includes Amir Rios, Carlo Travis, Kylon Harris, Bryce Gilyot, Dwayne Brown, Jabari Bolden, Andrew Smith, John Bowser, Leonte Turner, Aaron Sanders, Wuan Snyder, Warren Snyder III, Jermaine Mangle, Jahyi Jones, Bryan Warren, Kyvan Fobb, Christian Berrios, Shamar Simon, Khoi Jones, Alfred Cosey, Dkhai Joseph and Jaden Porter.
School Board member Shawn Wallace commended the young men and young ladies for persevering and continuing to grind despite the circumstances surrounding Hurricane Ida.
Board member Debbie Schum was proud to see graduates of East St. John High School on the coaching staff of both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
