GARYVILLE — The American flag at the Garyville substation was ripped August 29, 2021 after powerful winds from Hurricane Ida rolled through St. John the Baptist Parish. In the aftermath of Ida, officers removed the damaged flag from the pole for proper disposal.
When a flag is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.
Sheriff Mike Tregre reminds residents who have tattered, worn or damaged American flags to contact their local American Legion or Boy Scout troop or drop off at the St. John Sheriff’s Office in LaPlace for proper disposal. The VFW office on West Fifth Street in LaPlace also has a dropbox for worn flags.
