LAPLACE — Established in 1991, Superior Home Health Care, Inc. is privately owned and serves a large portion of Southeast Louisiana, including the River Parish region. High quality, compassionate care at home is a priority for both Superior Home Health and Modern Hospice & Palliative Care, an affiliated company that has served the region for more than 20 years. Common reasons for home health services include diabetes management, joint replacement, catheter/ostomy care, wound care, medication management, lymphedema therapy, IV therapy, congestive heart failure and even complications from COVID-19.

Lacey Trepagnier St. Pierre is a local representative for Superior Home Health and Modern Hospice. Born and raised in LaPlace, St. Pierre worked in wound care from 2006 to 2020. In that 14-year span, the company she worked for grew from three locations to 230 locations.

The COVID-19 pandemic shut down her position for the considerable future in early 2020 when she was eight months pregnant with her third child. The break provided the perfect opportunity to grow closer to her family and make a career change that would impact her life for the better.

“I was working for a big company when COVID-19 hit. I also had my third child, and when I was looking to come back into the workforce, I did not want to work for another huge company. I went with a company that had a smaller family feel. That’s how I ended up with Superior Home Health and Modern Hospice,” St. Pierre said.

According to St. Pierre, anyone who uses Superior Home Health and Modern Hospice will see firsthand how caring the nurses are when it comes to working with patients and their families.

Desiree Dillon, Amanda Stansbury and Ashley Carpenter are among the friendly faces serving the River Parishes. Director of Nursing Donna Hand also eager to assist patients and their families.

“It starts from the top director of nursing all the way down. It’s a feeling of family that they project to all of their patients,” St. Pierre said. “They usually go above and beyond for every one of their patients, and the people who go out to these patients’ homes love what they do.”

According to St. Pierre, home health encompasses a wide range of healthcare services for illness or injury. Home health treatment is a convenient and often more affordable alternative to hospital or skilled nursing facility care.

Superior Home Health offers individualized skilled nursing, therapeutic services and home health aide services in the community. A physician’s order is needed to evaluate and treat patients. According to St. Pierre, Superior Home Health will send a registered nurse to a patient’s home to assess his or her condition and determine whether home health services are needed.

Skilled nursing services include vital signs and blood pressure monitoring; IV therapy, antibiotics and inotropes; laboratory services; education on medications and disease processes; wound care and dressing changes; injections; ostomy and catheter care; medical supplies and equipment; AIM/palliative program; fall prevention; and a congestive heart failure program.

Meanwhile, physical, occupational and speech therapy fall under home health therapeutic services. A medical social worker may be provided, if needed.

Home health aide services offered through Superior Home Health can assist with a patient’s needs, which may include bathing, personal care, light housekeeping or other specialized services.

A multitude of insurances are accepted, including but not limited to Medicaire, Peoples Health Network Preferred, Medicaid and Worker’s Comp. Modern Hospice

When curative treatment is no long possible or desired by the patient, comfort and symptom management become the primary focus. Modern Hospice services are offered to patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less.

According to St. Pierre, Modern Hospice delivers a care regimen that blends symptom management with emotional support, spiritual support and psychosocial intervention. A multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors and volunteers work together to meet the patient’s needs and wants as they approach end of life.

Patients must be evaluated by a physician to qualify. Most major insurances are accepted; however, services are offered regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

While some mistakenly believe that hospice care is only for cancer patients, it can be beneficial to patients with conditions including but not limited to Alzheimer’s, cardiac disease, ALS, stroke and liver disease. The patient’s family is included in all decision-making while their loved one is in hospice care.
