‘Tails and Tales’ headlines the summer reading program

St. John the Baptist Parish Library System will host its Summer Reading Program starting on Tuesday, June 1 and ending on Saturday, July 31.  This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is “Tails and Tales.”  The library system will have a performance and activities throughout the month of June for children, teens and adults associated with the summer reading program’s theme.

The Kabuki Dancers are a group of performing artists dedicated to the improvement of the community through art.  Soul stirring spoken word, energized drumming/beats, rhythm, movement, b-boy and beyond; they’ve got it all.  Please join us as they bring it all together in a one-of-a-kind performance that is both electrifying and personal.  They will be performing at the Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (Central) on Tuesday, June 1, the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) on Wednesday, June 2, the Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) on Monday, June 7, and the Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) on Tuesday, June 8.  All performances will begin at 2 p.m.  For more information, please call your local branch.

Trina Smith, our Children’s Librarian, will be hosting programs weekly based on the “Tails and Tales” theme at the Central Library.  The programs will consist of Story Times, Grab and Go Kits, STEM activities and a Father’s Day craft.  A “Bookmark Challenge,” as well as a “Virtual Escape Room” will be conducted all month long on our social media platforms.  The Reserve Library will have a visit from the St. John Parish K-9 Unit on Thursday, June 10 at 10:30 a.m.  All patrons are welcome to attend.  Story Times, Grab and Go Kits, Animal Based Crafts, and “Walking for Your Health” will be back on June 8 at 10 a.m.  A “Bookmark Challenge” will also be held at the Garyville Library all month long, along with Animal Themed Story Times and Grab and Go Craft Kits.  “Summertime Science” projects will be hosted for the second and fourth Thursday in June.  Children, along with their parents are welcome to attend.  On Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children will be able to drop in and play some sidewalk games and draw their own using homemade chalk.  St. John Parish Fire Department will host a “Fire Safety Class” on Tuesday, June 22 for 11 a.m. the Edgard Library.  A tour will also be given of the fire truck.  An “Alice in Wonderland” themed tea party for children ages 5 and over will be hosted at the library.  Registration is required so please call (985) 497-3453 to sign up.  Movie Days, Story Times, Grab and Go Craft Kits and so much more will be offered.
