EDGARD — Academic signing day is a rite of passage for graduating seniors at West St. John High School in Edgard. Students are surrounded by family members and peers as they celebrate the future, proudly putting pen to paper to announce which academic institution they will attend after high school.

The entire school watched as 21 seniors penned their future plans during the annual signing day ceremony held Thursday morning in the West St. John High School gym. Principal Claude Hill Jr. has come to love the tradition in the six years he’s been at the school because he sees the way it inspires underclassmen to succeed.

“The importance is not just for the families and students to understand their commitment, but for the younger generation to also see the commitment and the effort and energy they carry in order to receive a scholarship for academics or athletics,” Hill said. “I think it’s important for the younger generation to see that to catapult them into their future endeavors and understand that they want to set goals and one day have a scholarship offer, too.”
