River Parish teams advance to softball playoffs

LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic and Riverside Academy were the only school in St. John the Baptist Parish to advance to the LHSAA softball play-offs this year.

St. Charles Catholic hosted the regional round of the Division III playoffs Tuesday evening. The No. 5 Lady Comets earned an 18-0 win over No. 12 Pope John Paul II. The regional round victory advanced the Lady Comets to the Division III quarterfinals to face No. 4 Houma Christian. The quarterfinal game will take place at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Westside Girls Softball Complex.

No. 12 Riverside Academy went into the regional round of the Division IV playoffs as the underdog against No. 5 St. Frederick. The game took place Tuesday evening at St. Frederick, and Riverside Academy prevailed with a 2-1 win. The Lady Rebels are now advancing to face No. 4 St. John in the Division IV quarterfinal round.

Other River Parishes teams earning a spot in the softball playoffs were Destrehan, Hahnville, Lutcher and St. James.

Lutcher, a No. 6 seed, hosted No. 27 Mansfield in the bi-district round, while No. 24 St. James faced No. 9 Brusly. Destrehan came into the playoffs as a No. 21 seed against No. 12 Northshore, and Hahnville entered the bi-district round as a No. 10 seed against No. 23 Chalmette.

Hahnville won 10-0 and advanced to face No. 7 Pineville in the regional round. Lutcher claimed a 15-0 victory and advanced to the regional round to face Pine Prairie.
