RESERVE — St. John Theatre is excited that the long intermission due to the COVID-19 pandemic is coming to a close as the Theatre announces that it will produce Once Upon a Mattress as its 2021 Summer Musical Production. Things will be a little different this year but performers are eager to get back on the stage.
The Historic St. John Theatre is celebrating 40 years of providing St. John and the surrounding parishes with quality live theatre. Summer 2021 will be no exception. Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer. Everyone is invited to join the St. John Theatre family and travel to a time many moons ago in a far-off land, where Queen Aggravain has decreed no couples can marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, has found a bride.
Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince, and help Lady Larkin and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all, a princess is a delicate thing.
All parts are open; crew, staff, and orchestra are also needed. Join the fun at St. John Theatre this summer.
An informational meeting will take place at 6 p.m. May 10, with auditions on May 11, 12 and 13, and callbacks at 6 p.m. May 14 at St. John Theatre in Reserve.
Show dates will be July 23-25 and 28-31.
